Chengdu 240-Hour Transit Itinerary: Pandas, Leshan and Dujiangyan

Chengdu 240-Hour Transit Itinerary

Chengdu is a good 240-hour stopover if you want pandas, Sichuan food and two World Heritage Sites within a couple of hours of the city. There's one thing to plan around that doesn't apply in Beijing or Shanghai: Sichuan's permitted area is a list of 11 cities, not the whole province.

Check official sources before travel. Checked on 6 October 2026. Confirm eligibility with the National Immigration Administration (hotline +86-12367) and your airline.

The rules for a Chengdu stopover

  • Entry ports: Chengdu Shuangliu and Chengdu Tianfu airports (NIA).
  • Permitted area in Sichuan: Chengdu, Zigong, Luzhou, Deyang, Suining, Neijiang, Leshan, Yibin, Ya'an, Meishan and Ziyang (NIA).
  • Clock: up to 240 hours from 00:00 on the day after arrival (NIA, Nov 2025).
  • Onward ticket: to a third country or region with a confirmed date and seat.

Anywhere in Sichuan outside those 11 cities is outside the permitted area. Leaving the permitted area isn't allowed (NIA). Check your plan in the 240-hour checker, which lists the permitted cities for your entry port.

Day 1: the panda base

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding needs some planning (panda base tickets):

Item Detail
Booking Online, real-name, up to 14 days ahead; sales stop when the daily quota is gone
Capacity 85,000 visitors a day
Adult ticket CNY 55
Entry slots, Mar–Oct Morning 7:30–12:00, afternoon 12:00–17:00
Entry slots, Nov–Feb Morning 8:00–12:00, afternoon 12:00–16:30
At the gate Bring the original ID used for the booking (your passport)

You can book through the base's official WeChat account or mini program, or through the authorised platforms it lists, including Trip.com (panda base tickets). The base warns against paid "fast-track entry" services.

Avoid Mondays if you can. No. 6 Giant Panda Villa, one of the busiest areas, closes every Monday under a rotational rest scheme for the pandas, and the Panda Art Museum also closes on Mondays. Both open on national statutory holidays (panda base notice).

Day 2: Leshan Giant Buddha

The Leshan Giant Buddha was carved out of a hillside in the 8th century. It's 71 m high and looks over the meeting of three rivers. UNESCO lists it with Mount Emei as one World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1996 (UNESCO). Leshan is one of the 11 permitted cities. You can visit as a day trip from Chengdu by train, or stay overnight and combine it with Mount Emei.

Day 3: Mount Emei

UNESCO describes Mount Emei as the site of China's first Buddhist temple, built in the 1st century AD, and notes its unusually varied vegetation from subtropical to subalpine (UNESCO). Emeishan city is a county-level city administered by Leshan, according to Leshan's government (Leshan government), which puts it inside the Leshan permitted area. Allow a full day, and more if you plan to go up to the summit.

Day 4: Dujiangyan and Mount Qingcheng

The Dujiangyan irrigation system, begun in the 3rd century BC, still distributes the Minjiang River's water across the Chengdu plain. Nearby Mount Qingcheng is described by UNESCO as the birthplace of Taoism. They form one World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2000 (UNESCO).

Dujiangyan is a county-level city that has been under Chengdu's administration since 1983, and Qingchengshan is one of its towns, according to the Sichuan Local Chronicles Office (Sichuan chronicles). That places both inside the Chengdu permitted area.

Day 5: Chengdu

Keep a free day in the city before your flight. Many free museums and sights in China ask you to book a time slot in advance through a mini program, a point one Xiaohongshu checklist for foreign visitors makes (全A少女瑞秋). Check each site's booking page a day or two ahead.

A longer trip: Chongqing or Yunnan

The NIA allows travel across provinces within the permitted areas (NIA), so with ten days you could add:

  • Chongqing: the whole municipality is a permitted area.
  • Yunnan: 9 cities and prefectures are permitted, including Kunming, Dali and Lijiang.

Commenters on a popular two-week itinerary video felt Yunnan deserves around ten days on its own (Ryan). On a 240-hour stopover, that's a reason to choose one region rather than rush both. Our two-week China itinerary has more on combining regions.

Plan to fly out from a Sichuan port. We found no official text on exiting from another province's port, so our checker answers check for that.
